Il Congresso Nazionale Tibetano in solidarietà con la lotta di Hong Kong per il suffragio universale

Il Congresso Nazionale Tibetano è tremendamente rincuorato dalla vostra protesta coraggiosa e di ispirazione per la libertà e la democrazia, nonostante la travolgente violenza della polizia, l'uso su larga scala di gas lacrimogeni e spray al peperoncino, e gli attacchi portati dai provocatori. Noi, come voi, comprendiamo che la posta in gioco è a portata di mano, e condividiamo il vostro dolore, mentre lottiamo contro un nemico comune che è un inflessibile regime autoritario deciso a governare con il pugno di ferro. Mentre avete iniziato la vostra protesta e coraggiosamente resistito ai tentativi sempre più violenti del governo per reprimerla, due tibetani si sono coraggiosamente immolati in segno di protesta contro il governo di Pechino, di questo stesso regime, portando il totale dei tibetani immolati negli ultimi anni a 139. Recentemente, Ilham Tohti, un professore uiguro, è stato condannato al carcere a vita, per aver postato le sue opinioni sul web. E siamo tutti pienamente consapevoli delle migliaia di studenti cinesi che sono stati assassinati da questo stesso governo nel 1989, durante massacro di piazza Tiananmen.

Non siete soli. Anche se il percorso può essere lungo e difficile il viaggio, non siete soli. Tibet e Hong Kong condividono legami comuni. Entrambi sono manifestazioni di legittime aspirazioni con cui verrà testato il vero impegno della comunità mondiale verso i principi della democrazia.

E' importante tenere a mente che i grandi eventi, come quello in cui siete coinvolti in questo momento, arrivano alla confluenza della storia, inaspettatamente e di solito non attesi, ma contenendo inimmaginabili opportunità e promesse. Grandi opere richiedono grandi cuori, al fine di assumere compiti Erculei, come quando Gandhi ha intrapreso la Marcia del Sale, e Martin Luther King ha guidato la marcia di Montgomery. Entrambi erano proteste pacifiche assediate da difficoltà, ma che alla fine hanno trionfato e fatto la storia. Crediamo che anche voi siate vicini a scrivere un nuovo capitolo della storia, innescando una rivoluzione che non solo cambierà Hong Kong, ma la Cina stessa; e aiuterà ad abbattere vecchie e superate ideologie. La vostra lotta non è solo lotta per il futuro del popolo di Hong Kong, ma per tutti i cittadini che amano la libertà e che condividono la stessa convinzione, che tutti gli uomini e le donne di questo mondo sono dotate di diritti umani fondamentali che non possono essere trattenuti da alcun governo, straniero o nazionale.

Il Congresso Nazionale Tibetano estende il proprio supporto completo e costante per la vostra protesta che è per noi di enorme ispirazione, che non solo ha attirato l'attenzione e la simpatia del mondo per le legittime richieste del popolo di Hong Kong per un governo democratico, ma ha anche focalizzato l'attenzione sul rifiuto del governo cinese di riconoscere i diritti umani fondamentali al proprio popolo e affermando la sua occupazione militare e la brutale repressione in Tibet e nel Turkestan orientale.

Tibetan National Congress In Solidarity With Hong Kong’s Fight For Universal Suffrage

The Tibetan National Congress is tremendously heartened by your courageous and inspirational protest for freedom and democracy in spite of the overwhelming police violence, large-scale use of tear gas and pepper spray, and attacks by hired thugs.We, like you, understand the stakes at hand and share your pain, as we struggle against a common enemy that is an unyielding authoritarian regime bent on ruling with an iron fist. As you began your protest and bravely withstood the Government’s increasingly violent attempts to break you down, two Tibetans bravely self-immolated in protest against rule by this same Beijing regime, bringing the total of Tibetan self-immolations to 139 in the last few years. Recently, Ilham Tohti, a Uyghur professor, was sentenced to life in prison, for posting his opinions on the web. And we are all fully aware of the thousands of Chinese students who were murdered by this same government in the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

You are not alone. Though the path might be long and the journey difficult, you are not alone. Tibet and Hong Kong share common bonds: both are measures by which the world community’s true commitment to the principles of democracy will be tested. Both are manifestations of the legitimate and just aspirations of the Tibetan and Hong Kong peoples.

It is important to bear in mind that great events, such as the one you are involved in at the moment, come at the confluence of history, unexpectedly and usually uninvited, but bearing unimaginable opportunity and promise. Great deeds demand great hearts in order to take on Herculean tasks – such as when Gandhi embarked on the Salt March and Martin Luther King led the Montgomery March. Both were peaceful protests beset with hardship but they ultimately triumphed and made history. I believe you are on the brink of writing a new chapter in history, sparking a revolution that will not only change Hong Kong but China itself; and will help tear down old and outdated ideologies. You are not only fighting for the future of the Hong Kong people but for all freedom-loving citizens in this world who share the same belief that all men and women are endowed with fundamental human rights that cannot be withheld by any Government, foreign or domestic.

The Tibetan National Congress extends its full and unwavering support to your enormously inspirational protest, one that has not only drawn the full attention and sympathy of the world to the rightful demands of the people of Hong Kong for democratic rule, but has also focused attention on the Chinese government’s denial of basic human rights to its own people and to its military occupation and brutal repression in Tibet and East Turkestan.
