Casa Bianca dichiara che il Congresso potrebbe sopprimere l’affare Iran

Nonostante anni di intensi negoziati, i legislatori potrebbero "sopprimere" l'accordo che le potenze mondiali e l'Iran, hanno intermediato nel mese di luglio, la Casa Bianca ha dichiarato Mercoledì che cerca ulteriore sostegno dai legislatori.

"Il Congresso ha la capacità di sopprimere questo accordo", ha detto il portavoce Josh Earnest ai giornalisti, spiegando che i legislatori potrebbero effettivamente compromettere l'accordo, rifiutando di permettere al presidente Barack Obama di abolire le sanzioni.

"Rifiuteranno di permettere agli Stati Uniti di attuare un accordo internazionale che, in fondo, il resto del mondo ha giàfirmato" ha detto Josh Earnest.

L'Iran ha accettato di permettere ispezioni senza precedenti e cordoli sul suo programma nucleare in cambio della liberazione dalle sanzioni economiche che hanno ostacolato l'economia della Repubblica Islamica. Il Congresso tornerà a Washington all'inizio del mese prossimo prima del 17 settembre, scadenza per votare sul patto.

Earnest ha aggiunto che ci sono attualmente 26 o 27 senatori che hanno espresso sostegno all'accordo, e solo due democratici che hanno sono registrato la loro opposizione. Il sostegno democratico è fondamentale per il Senato, dove l'amministrazione Obama sta cercando di assicurare che i legislatori non possano ignorare un veto presidenziale. Avrebbero bisogno di una maggioranza dei due terzi per farlo, ciò richiederebbe il sostegno cardine di 10 Democratici. I repubblicani attualmente detengono 54 seggi dei 100 membri del Senato.

Martedì scorso, il senatore Patty Murray, il quarto di rango nel Senato democratico, è il nuovo senatore a sostenere ufficialmente l'accordo. Sen. Harry Reid, il leader della minoranza al Senato, ha offerto Domenica il suo sostegno all'accordo. "Ci sono diversi indizi che stiamo riuscendo nei nostri sforzi per costruire un sostegno sufficiente per l'accordo al Congresso, ma certamente bisogna raccogliere il maggior numero di voti possibile", ha concluso Josh Earnest.

White House says Congress could 'kill' Iran deal

Despite years of intensive negotiations, lawmakers could “kill” the agreement that world powers and Iran brokered in July, the White House said Wednesday as it seeks additional support from lawmakers.

“Congress does have the capacity to kill this agreement,” spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters, saying lawmakers could effectively undermine the agreement by refusing to allow President Barack Obama to lift sanctions.

“They'll refuse to allow the United States to implement an international agreement that basically the rest of the world has signed off on,” Earnest said.

Iran agreed to allow unprecedented inspections and curbs on its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions that have stymied the Islamic Republic’s economy.

Congress will return to Washington early next month before a Sept. 17 deadline to vote on the pact.

Earnest said that there are currently “26 or 27” senators who have voiced support for the agreement, and only two Democrats who have registered their opposition to the accord.

Democratic support is critical in the Senate where the Obama administration is seeking to ensure that lawmakers cannot override a presidential veto. They would need a two-thirds majority to do so, which would require support from 10 pivotal Democrats. Republicans currently hold 54 seats in the 100 member Senate.

On Tuesday, Sen. Patty Murray, the fourth-ranking Senate Democrat, became the newest senator to officially back the agreement. Sen. Harry Reid, the senate minority leader, on Sunday lent his support to the agreement.

“There are several indications that we are succeeding in our efforts to build sufficient support for the agreement in the Congress, but we certainly want to collect as many votes as possible,” he said.
