Israel 'playing with fire' at Aqsa compound

Senior PLO official Hanan Ashrawi on Monday accused Israel of provoking the entire Muslim world in its actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, after violent clashes rocked the holy site for the second straight day.

"Israel is playing with fire," the PLO executive committee member said during a meeting with the British Consul General to Jerusalem, Alastair McPhail, according to a statement.

"Clearly, Israel is deliberately creating and escalating a situation of instability, insecurity and violence."

She said that Israeli authorities were forcibly securing control over the site "in preparation for the total annexation and transformation of Al-Haram Al-Sharif," referring to the mosque compound by its Arabic name.

"By imposing its own version of its concept of the Temple Mount on the third holiest Islamic site, Israel is not only provoking the Palestinians, but the entire Muslim world," she said.

"We call on the international community, including Arab countries and Muslim states, to intervene immediately before Israel succeeds in launching a global holy war."

Palestinians clashed with Israeli police at Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for the second straight day Monday as Jews celebrated their new year and Palestinian protesters vowed to protect the holy site.

Israeli forces detained and injured a number of Palestinians, including journalists, during the clashes, and protesters reportedly barricaded themselves inside the mosque.

Palestinians have expressed fears that Israel is seeking to change rules governing the site, with far-right Jewish groups pushing for more access to the compound and even efforts by fringe organisations to erect a new temple.

Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the compound, but Jews are not allowed to pray or display national symbols, under an agreement between Israel and the Islamic Endowment that controls the site.

Jordan king, Arab League warns Israel against Aqsa provocation

Jordan's king warned Israel on Monday that any further "provocation" in Jerusalem where Israeli police have clashed with Muslims at Al-Aqsa Mosque would damage ties between the two countries.

"Any more provocation in Jerusalem will affect the relationship between Jordan and Israel" which have a 1994 peace accord, said King Abdullah II following a second day of clashes at the flashpoint holy site in annexed east Jerusalem.

"Jordan will not have a choice but to take actions, unfortunately," he told journalists in English after talks with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The kingdom has custodian rights over the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

On Sunday, the Ministerial councils of the Arab League also warned Israel against possible repercussions for its actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, according to a statement released by the league.

The council, during its 144 session, said the Arab League considers the most recent clashes at the Al-Aqsa compound, and Israel's "attempt to divide" the holy site, a provocation against the Arab states.

The council reiterated that the Palestinian issue remains central to Arab nations, and that they categorically reject to recognize Israeli as a Jewish state.

Muslims and Israeli police clashed for a second day Monday as Jews celebrated their new year and protesters vowed to protect Islam's third-holiest site.

As on Sunday, Israeli security forces entered the compound to prevent Muslim youths from "harassing visiting Jews," Israeli police said.

Muslims have barricaded themselves inside Al-Aqsa amid protests over access to the site, venerated by Jews as the Temple Mount.

Israel seized East Jerusalem from Jordanian administration in 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community.

New clashes break out at Al-Aqsa compound

Palestinians clashed with Israeli police at East Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for a third straight day on Tuesday, AFP reported.

Young demonstrators gathered around the mosque threw stones at police who had entered the compound in large numbers and who responded with stun grenades. Clashes first broke out on Sunday, when witnesses said Israeli police entered the mosque and caused damage to prayer mats. Israeli police said they only closed the doors to the mosque to lock in rioters throwing stones, fireworks and other objects. Meanwhile, Arab leadership have vowed to ‘confront Israeli aggression’ on Aqsa with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir confirming on Monday that movement will be made “at all levels to confront any act of aggression carried out by the Israeli occupation or the Israeli settlers against Al-Aqsa Mosque.” The mosque compound is the site of frequent clashes. In late July, Israeli police entered Al-Aqsa as they clashed with Muslims angered by Jews’ access to the compound on an annual day of Jewish mourning. Under the current status quo, Jews are permitted to visit the esplanade but not to pray there for fear it would cause friction with Muslim worshippers.
