Russian envoy: US missiles and launch sites will be targeted if fired at Syria

“If there is a strike by the Americans in Syria then … the missiles will be downed and even their launch sites would be targeted,” Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin told Hizballah’s al-Manar TV Wednesday. The ambassador said he was citing a statement by President Vladimir Putin and the Russian chief of staff. DEBKAfile:  Moscow’s choice of the TV station of Iran’s Lebanese proxy as the platform for its harshest and most explicit threat yet against a US military strike attests to the high degree of Russian-Iranian coordination for its response to the projected US-British-French operation in Syria. His reference to “launch sites” means that US aircraft and naval craft are also in Moscow’s sights.

Putin and Netanyahu talk by phone

President Vladimir Putin and Binyamin Netanyahu held a phone conversation on Wednesday, at a high-tension moment before a US military operation in Syria. According to a Kremlin statement, the Russian president asked Israel to refrain from steps that might aggravate the critical military situation in Syria or affect Syrian security. Other sources quote Putin as asking Israel to leave Syria alone and respect its sovereignty. Netanyahu said later, in an address to the opening ceremony of Holocaust Memorial Day in Jerusalem, that he would advise Iran “not to test Israel’s resolve.”
