Fayyad praises non-violent resistance movement

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad praised the non-violent resistance movement on Sunday in a ceremony held in the village of Bilin.

Bilin's role in the popular resistance movement has "succeeded in communicating our people's message to all over the world," Fayyad said at an Iftar [breaking the Ramadan fast] meal in the village.

The ceremony was organized by the Popular Committee against the Wall to honor the role of journalists and the media.

The non-violent resistance movement has played a large role in national efforts to end the Israeli occupation and secure the establishment of a Palestinian State, Fayyad said, noting that it is a vital accompaniment to political efforts by the PLO and PA in the struggle against occupation.

The Ramallah PM called for greater freedoms for journalists, intellectuals and writers and praised the role of the media in delivering Bilin's message of popular resistance to the world.

Fayyad thanked the people of Bilin and the Popular Committee against the Wall for hosting the event.

The village of Bilin holds a weekly Friday rally to protest against Israel's confiscation of village lands.

Six years after the struggle began in Bilin and four years after the Israeli High Court had ordered the re-routing of the separation wall, residents were finally granted access in June 2011 to 600 dunams of land previously annexed by Israel.

The non-violent resistance movement is a key part of the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation.

Palestinian rallies in the West Bank are regularly met with a violent response by Israeli forces.
