Attentato suicida scuote un hotel di Beirut

Un attentatore suicida si è fatto esplodere Mercoledì sera durante un raid della sicurezza nel Duroy hotel, lungo il lungomare occidentale Raouche di Beirut, ferendo almeno 10 persone nel più recente attacco terroristico che scuote il paese.

Il saudita ha fatto fuori i suoi esplosivi mentre membri della sicurezza facevano irruzione nella struttura. Un altro aspiranti bomber, affetti da gravi ustioni, è stato arrestato a seguito dell'esplosione, lo ha riportato l’agenzia Nazionale libanese.

Riferendo più tardi che l'identità del defunto attentatore è stata confermato come saudita, Abdel Rahman al-Homeiqi, nato nel 1994.

Le forze di sicurezza hanno isolato il Duroy hotel, tenendo i civili a distanza mentre gli investigatori perquisivano la zona in cerca di altri esplosivi e i vigili del fuoco lavoravano per spegnere l'incendio al terzo piano dell'hotel. La NNA ha aggiunto che gli investigatori hanno scoperto una valigia piena di esplosivo.

Un funzionario giudiziario libanese è accorso sulla scena dell'esplosione e ha confermato ai giornalisti che un attentatore si è ucciso mentre un altro è stato arrestato durante il raid.

Il Commissario Militare del Governo, giudice della Corte Saqr Saqr, ha aggiunto che tre membri generali della sicurezza sono rimasti feriti nell'esplosione.

L'esplosione ha ferito anche sette civili, i quali sono stati portati all’American University of Beirut Medical Center, ha detto il capo della Croce Rossa George Kettaneh.

Nel frattempo, il ministro dell'Interno Nohad Mashnouq ha detto ai giornalisti sulla scena che l'incidente è stato un "attacco preventivo al General Security, perché l'attentatore suicida voleva far esplodere se stesso altrove … Le misure di sicurezza che vengono adottate impediscono agli attentatori suicidi di raggiungere i loro obiettivi", ha aggiunto.

Poco dopo l'esplosione, i sunniti liberi delle Brigate Baalbek hanno rivendicato la responsabilità per l'esplosione all’hotel, dicendo che "altri mujahidin sono ora al sicuro al di fuori della zona dell’operazione suicidio … Le nostre benedette operazioni non risparmieranno Hezbollah, l'esercito crociato, o chiunque altro prenda di mira i liberi mujaheddin", il poco noto gruppo terroristico ha postato sul suo account Twitter@Ahrarsunab3lbek.

Tuttavia, Mashnuq ha detto che la pretesa responsabilità del gruppo era una "dichiarazione tradizionale, che non può essere né confermata né smentita."

Tra i rapporti che l'attentatore era un cittadino saudita, l'ambasciata di Riyadh a Beirut ha informato il NNA al telefono che stanno controllando l'identità del kamikaze. L'ambasciata ha aggiunto che si coordina con le autorità libanesi per scoprire se l'ID trovata sul luogo dell'esplosione fosse falsa.

Il Leader del Movimento del Futuro Membro del Parlamento, Saad Hariri, ha espresso, sul suo account Twitter, la sua solidarietà "con tutte gli apparati di sicurezza, dall'esercito, al Sicurezza Generale, e alle forze di sicurezza interna nella loro battaglia contro i covi del terrorismo."

Egli ha anche messo a nudo questo incidente da qualsiasi aspetto religioso, sostenendo che "i musulmani in Libano non hanno nulla a che fare con gli impostori che appartengono ad alcuna setta, ma solo al terrorismo."

Suicide bombing rocks 
Beirut hotel

A suicide bomber detonated himself Wednesday evening during a security raid in the Duroy Hotel along western Beirut's seaside Raouche promenade, injuring at least 10 people in the latest terror attack to rock the country.

The Saudi national set off his explosives as General Security members raided the hotel, while another would-be bomber suffering from severe burn wounds was arrested following the blast, Lebanon's state National News Agency reported. 

The NNA later reported that the deceased bomber's identity was confirmed as Saudi-national Abdel Rahman al-Homeiqi, who was born in 1994.

Security forces cordoned off the Duroy Hotel to keep civilians at a distance as investigators swept the area for explosives and firefighters worked to extinguish the fire in the third floor of the hotel.

The NNA added that during their security sweep, investigators discovered an explosives-laden case. 

A top Lebanese judicial official rushed to the scene of the blast and confirmed to reporters that one bomber killed himself while another was arrested during the raid. 

Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr added that three General Security members were injured in the explosion.

The blast also wounded seven civilians, all of whom were rushed to the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Red Cross chief George Kettaneh said.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Nohad Mashnouq told reporters at the scene that the incident was a "preemptive strike from General Security because the suicide bomber wanted to detonate himself elsewhere."

"The security measures that are being taken are preventing suicide bombers from reaching their targets," he added.

Shortly after the blast, the Free Sunnis of Baalbek Brigades claimed responsibility for the hotel explosion, and said that its other "mujahideen are now safely outside of the suicide operation area."

"Our blessed operations will not spare [Hezbollah], the crusader army, or whoever else targets free mujahedeen," the little-known terror group posted on its @Ahrarsunab3lbek Twitter account.

However, Mashnuq said the group's responsibility claim was a "traditional statement that can neither be confirmed nor refuted."

Amid reports the bomber was a Saudi national, Riyadh’s embassy in Beirut informed the NNA over the phone that it was “checking the identity of the suicide bomber.”

The embassy added that it was coordinating with Lebanese authorities to find out whether the ID found at the explosion site was fake.

Future Movement leader MP Saad Hariri expressed on his Twitter account his solidarity with "all security apparatuses, from the army, to General Security, to the Internal Security Forces in their [fight] against the dens of terrorism."

He also stripped this incident from any religious aspect, claiming that "Muslims in Lebanon have nothing to do with the impostors who belong to no sect but terrorism."
