Abbas mette in guardia i leader internazionali sul pericolo degli scontri in Al Asqa

Domenica, il Presidente Mahmoud Abbas ha avvertito i leader internazionali presso l'Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite, del potenziale pericolo degli eventi in corso nel complesso di Al-Aqsa a Gerusalemme Est occupata. Abbas ha riferito alla TV Palestina che aveva incontrato i leader mondiali in una serie di incontri a margine della 70° sessione generale delle Nazioni Unite a New York, dicendo loro che "tutto il mondo dovrebbe essere consapevole di ciò che sta accadendo nel cortile della moschea." Lunedi è stato il secondo giorno consecutivo di violenti scontri fra polizia israeliana e manifestanti palestinesi presso il sito, che è il terzo luogo santo dell'Islam. Abbas ha detto ai leader che Israele sta cercando di cambiare la natura del conflitto da un conflitto politico ad uno quella religioso. Il presidente ha chiesto ai capi di esercitare pressioni sul primo ministro israeliano Benjamin Netanyahu per l'attuazione degli accordi firmati tra Israele e Palestina. Ha anche detto che era pronto a riprendere i colloqui di pace se le autorità israeliane accettassero di cessare la costruzione di insediamenti e di rilasciare un certo numero di prigionieri palestinesi in carcere da prima degli Accordi di Oslo del 1993. Israele ha fino ad ora liberato tre gruppi di prigionieri pre Oslo, ed era in programmato la liberazione di un quarto gruppo, che è stata annullata dopo che il presidente Abbas ha presentato domanda di adesione a 15 convenzioni delle Nazioni Unite. Abbas ha inoltre incontrato un certo numero di alti funzionari arabi ed europei. Durante il fine settimana ha incontrato il presidente americano Barack Obama e il segretario di Stato Usa John Kerry. Mercoledì è previsto un discorso di fronte all'Assemblea Generale, dove è atteso per sollecitare la comunità internazionale ad "impegnarsi per le sue responsabilità" riguardanti la Palestina.

All'inizio di questo mese, il presidente ha detto ad Al-Quds al-Arabi con sede a Londra, che aveva in mente inserire una granata durante il suo discorso. Nel mese di luglio, fonti hanno riferito a Ma'an che avrebbe usato la sessione delle Nazioni Unite per discutere il suo futuro nella politica palestinese, nel mezzo della speculazione sul fatto che abbia intenzione di dimettersi dalla presidenza palestinese.

Abbas warns international leaders of 'danger' over Asqa clashes

President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday warned international leaders at the UN General Assembly of the potential danger of ongoing events at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. Abbas told Palestine TV that he had told world leaders in a series of meetings at the sidelines of the UN session in New York that "the whole world" should be aware of what is happening at the mosque compound. Monday saw the second straight day of violent clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters at the site, which is the third holiest in Islam. Abbas told leaders that Israel is seeking to change the nature of the conflict from a political to religious one. The president said that he asked the leaders to exert pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to implement signed agreements between Israel and Palestine. He also said that he was ready to resume peace talks if Israeli authorities agree to cease settlement construction and to release a number of Palestinian prisoners jailed before the 1993 Oslo Accord. Israel has so far released three groups of pre-Oslo prisoners and was scheduled to free a fourth group but canceled the release after President Abbas applied for membership of 15 UN conventions. Abbas reportedly met with a number of senior Arab and European officials. He also met with US President Barack Obama and US Secretary of State John Kerry over the weekend.

He is currently scheduled to deliver a speech before the General Assembly on Wednesday, where he is expected to urge the international community to "commit to its responsibilities" concerning Palestine. Earlier this month, the president told London-based Al-Quds al-Arabi that he planned to "drop a bombshell" during his speech.

In July, sources told Ma'an that he would use the UN session to discuss his own future in Palestinian politics, amid speculation that he plans to resign as Palestinian president.
