G7 statement on North Korea

We, the G7 Leaders condemn in the strongest possible terms the new nuclear test conducted by North Korea and express our solidarity to the countries of the region for the consequences of Pyongyang's irresponsible behavior.

North Korea, as the only country to have performed nuclear tests in the XXI century, continues to challenge the international community with serious, repeated and ongoing violations of international law. These nuclear tests are an intolerable provocation which presents a direct challenge against the international community.

The advancement of the North Korean nuclear and ballistic programs, including the development and testing of ballistic missiles of intercontinental range, increasingly poses new levels of threat of a grave nature to international peace and stability and the non-proliferation regime. The latest nuclear test, given the magnitude of the explosion, has raised the challenge to an unprecedented level

North Korea must immediately and fully comply with all relevant UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs) and abandon all nuclear and ballistic missile programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

We stand ready to further strengthen measures aimed at achieving these objectives and strongly call on the UN Security Council to meet its responsibilities and to work towards the adoption of a new and effective resolution that includes stronger measures. We appeal to the international community to redouble its efforts to ensure the sustained, comprehensive and thorough implementation of relevant UNSCRs and ensure that North Korea reverts to international legality.

chinachristiandaily.com - September 23, 2016 - On his appearance in the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang: "We should remain committed to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and seek consultation and dialogue for a solution, so as to maintain the international nuclear non-proliferation regime."

AsiaNews - 14/09/2016 - Msgr. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, the South Korean Bishops' Commission for Justice and Peace in a statement entitled "Appeal for Peace." has written: "Give up the development of atomic weapons. The nuclear ambitions of North Korea is contrary to the common effort for peace in Korea and the nuclear disarmament of the peninsula. You cannot separate peace from having nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons can never be developed for 'the protection of peace' and 'security of one’s country'. Nuclear weapons only cause disputes, and they bring the great spiritual and physical danger of destruction and death … Continuing to tighten sanctions against the regime in the North, will only increase the tension. The real purpose of any sanction should be to open the door to dialogue and negotiation. It is not right that the people, and especially the weakest, are those who suffer sanctions most. Targeting the economy is a measure that should be prudently applied, always following a criterion of legitimacy and morality. Remember that heavier sanctions will only increase the danger of a direct clash. Do not abandon dialogue … the nations that surround the peninsula. North Korean nuclear tests should not become a pretext to put nuclear weapons in any Asian country. We hope for the disarmament of the peninsula, as well as that of the continent. We must foster peace between the two Koreas, so that peace can become the seed for true peace in the world. Only the balance of peace, not the balance of power, can resolve the tensions in Korea and the threat to peace in the world … We hope and pray that mankind never forget that the fruits of hatred and violence are still flourishing in the world. Hatred creates greater hatred, violence creates more violence. Peace comes not through the logic of the powerful (cfr. Gaudium et Spes, 78). Peace is complete when disagreements and misery, which lead the war, decrease and when the desire for order and for peace grows in all men".
